Behr Venetian Plaster

Close your eyes and imagine the sounds of Italian opera filling the house. Visualize elegant ladies and gentlemen wearing masquerade costumes, swishing in a waltz across the floor. Behr Venetian plaster on your walls helps transport you to another world. It adds an upmarket look without costing the earth because you can apply it yourself. Step-by-step guides are available at your home renovation supplies store and you can even take classes to learn how to use Behr Venetian plaster, which is available in 24 different colors.

What is it exactly?

Behr Venetian plaster is a heavy-bodied, water-based plaster product that is applied in two coats onto smooth surfaces. It can be manipulated to take on a marble-like appearance so it is quite versatile as well as highly attractive.

Cost savings

Anything you can do yourself saves you money. Labor is one of the most expensive factors of any renovation job. One gallon of Behr Venetian plaster goes for about $30, with the top coat running at around $9 per gallon.

Where can it be used?

You can apply Behr Venetian plaster to primed or previously painted interior walls and ceilings. Use it on a feature wall or totally transform your living room, dining room or hallways. Your bedroom can take on a fantasy appearance with old-world plaster effects.

Preparation

As with any painting job, you will need to prepare the surfaces to accept Behr Venetian plaster effectively. Mildew on walls and ceilings can be treated with Behr's Multi-Surface Cleaner and Mildew Stain Remover. Any loose or flaky paint should be removed and dirt and grease washed off with detergent.

The surface must be allowed to dry before applying the plaster. Repair any imperfections and give a good sanding and dusting before beginning. If you are applying Behr Venetian plaster to a surface to which new stucco, masonry or plaster has been applied, it must cure for 30 days before priming can begin.

Application

Hints on techniques to use when applying Behr Venetian plaster are available on the Behr website or you can ask for ideas from the clever people at the supplies store where you buy your products.

It's important to apply the plaster when conditions are right; that is, the ambient temperature in the room should be between 50-90°F.
Never add thinners to Behr Venetian plaster.
Allow four hours drying time between coats.
If burnishing, you must allow the second coat to dry for at least 24 hours, and burnish within 7 days of application. In cooler climates and high humidity, allow a longer drying time.

Cleaning up

As Behr Venetian plaster is a water-based product, clean-up is easy, using detergent and water.
