Choosing A Home Air Compressor

Air compressors are known for their ability to pump up tyres in a few seconds, but very few people know that they can also be used to power tools that require air to work, nail guns and spray guns for example. If you own a car or call DIY a hobby then it is a good idea to have an air compressor to hand. Jedoch, choosing a home compressor can be difficult if you do not know where to begin. Reading this quick guide to the air compressor will enable you to make an informed choice

Types Of Air Compressor

When you are choosing a home air compressor, you will come across two distinct types to choose from. There are piston type compressors and compact air compressors. They are very different in size and function so you may want to read the descriptions carefully in order to be able to choose the best home air compressor for you.

If you are choosing a home air compressor to function with small household DIY items then the compact air compressor may be the best choice for you. It is extremely small and light, and thus easy to store, and will actually power items like caulking and gluing guns.

They are also commonly used to inflate footballs and other similar sports equipment. Jedoch, they do not have a storage tank attached to them and thus have to be attached to a power supply when in use at all times. This makes it impossible to use if you want to power a larger item.

Piston Air Compressors

In complete contrast to the compact air compressor, the piston type air compressor does have a storage tank and can be used to power any DIY item in the home. If you are choosing a home air compressor for general use then the piston type air compressor may be for you.

The storage tank will initially be filled with air at a certain pressure, which you can specify, and the motor filling it will cut out when it is full. Jedoch, when the air pressure drops to a certain level when the air compressor is in use, the motor will restart and fill the tank to the set level. It saves energy because the motor does not have to run continuously in order for it to work, and is far more convenient if you are inflating tyres, for example, because the air is already ready to be used.

Horsepower, Power Supply And Maintenance

There are certain factors that you should take into consideration when choosing a home air compressor of which horsepower, maintenance and power supply are just three. They are the most important factors though and should influence your decision.

Horsepower, for example, tells you how powerful the air compressor motor actually is. Air compressors are usually between 1.5 and 6.5HP. For home use, you should aim to get a compressor of no more than 4HP unless a specific tool requires it. The tools above that are used in industry.

Choosing a home air compressor that is easy to maintain may be a good idea if you have little time to spare. You can purchase oil-lubricated compressors and oil-free compressors. The latter are extremely easy to maintain because they have sealed bearings. They take less time to maintain as a result, whereas the former often have to have their oil changed on a regular basis in order to stay in good working order for a longer period of time.

The final factor in choosing a home air compressor is the power supply. You can buy gas and electric powered air compressors and they both have their advantages. Jedoch, if you are planning to use it within the home then you should choose an electric air compressor. Gas air compressors should never be used in a confined space and so are not advisable for use in the home.
