How To Get Rid Of Ants

Getting rid of ants that have invaded your home can be a difficult task. Once ants have found a food source, they alert many of the other ants in the colony and a wave of ants will come to investigate the food source to carry away as much of the food as they can. There are many different schools of thought on how to get rid of ants and some homeowners try several different methods before finding the one that works on the ants that have invaded their home.

There are lots of different types of ants present near residential areas and it can be difficult to identify which types of ants are causing the problems in your home. The many different species of ants are typically identified by small distinguishing markings that are very difficult for the homeowner to find without the benefit of a magnifying glass. Because most homeowners are unwilling to get close enough to the ants to positively identify them, many ant removal techniques are designed to work on several different species of ants.

Chemical Ant Removal Products

There are many different types of chemical ant removal products on the market today that are very good for getting rid of ants. Some of the products are sprays that can be used in almost every area of the home, excluding kitchen countertops, and are effective at killing the ants immediately.

The drawbacks to using a chemical spray to get rid of the ants in your home is that the chemicals in the spray can be harmful to children and pets and that the sprays do not kill the colony of ants, only the ants that you can see.

Another type of chemical ant removal product is the bait trap. These bait traps are placed in areas where the ants are common and smell like food to the ant, enticing the ant to carry the poison that is placed in the trap back to the ant colony where it is fed to the other ants as well.

Bait traps are an attractive option for killing the entire colony of ants and preventing their return, but it often takes days before a significant decrease in the number of ants in the home are noticed.

Natural Ant Removal Products

Some homeowners do not like to use harsh chemicals and poisons for getting rid of the ants in their home, either because they are concerned about their children and their pets or because they prefer to use natural products to handle their ant problem.

There are many natural remedies that can be found to control the ant population in the home, although many of these take longer to work than their chemical counterparts. Strong spices such as whole cloves, cinnamon, bay leaves, and black pepper are said to be an effective natural ant deterrent as the strong scent present in the spices causes the ants to retreat back to the outdoors.

Other natural and non chemical agents that have been found to be an effective ant deterrent include vinegar, baby powder, and peppermint oil. These items typically work by placing the agent on and near the trails that ants create when looking for food. With repeated applications to the ant’s trails, the ants will begin to disburse and within a few days the ants will disappear from the home.
