Mattress Discounters

Mattress discounters offer the consumer the ability to buy a decent bed for less than the retail price. However, when buying from a mattress discounter there are some issues that the average consumer needs to be aware of prior to buying a mattress from a mattress discounter.

The first issue is that you need to be reasonably sure of what you are looking for in a mattress. Most mattress discounters will do whatever it takes to sell a mattress. Because of this, expect high-pressure sales technique, with upgrades brought up.

Delivery Included?

You should be able to get free delivery, as well as them taking the old mattress, but try to stay within your budget. Don't tell the salesman your budget, or he will try to sell you something towards the high end. Remember to do your shopping ahead of time, using the Internet and the company web site, and you should be okay.

The second thing is to be aware of the company's reputation. Although most mattress discounters are reputable and honest, there are a few with lousy customer service records and need to be watched out for.

Deliveries have not been made, and the customer blamed, even though the mattress never left the store. Also, rudeness and an unwillingness to correct problems should be watched out for, as this can cause potential financial problems and health risks, especially if the person was buying the bed to alleviate back problems.

Relabeling

The third issue is to watch out for "equivalent mattresses". In a number of cases, all that has really happened is that the mattress discounter has relabeled the mattress, and is possibly passing an inferior mattress off using a label from a better mattress. The obvious issue is that the mattress won't have the qualities that you were looking for, and could cause aggravation of existing health conditions.

Another issue is that the mattress could have been "reconditioned", and possibly have hidden problems (such as possible bedbugs). Again, check with consumer reporting sites to determine the potential issues with any given mattress discounter.

Mattress discounters are usually fair merchants, but there is the occasional scoundrel in the bunch. As long as you go into the situation with your eyes open, and having done the proper research prior to going in, you should be able to deal with any issues that crop up. Just be aware that not all mattress discounters are necessarily bad people, and you should be able to get the mattress you need and set out to get.
