Picnic Baskets

Everyone remembers picnic baskets as being the favorite target of a certain bear. Picnic baskets also seemed to be a part of the past, especially as SUVs and coolers are used for outside expeditions. However, as romance blooms yet again and the past takes on a nostalgic air, picnic baskets are again becoming part of the expeditions to the woods, and are even being expanded to family trips.

When packing your picnic basket, keep in mind who you are packing for, and why; you obviously would not pack the same things for a family expedition as you would for something more intimate. Nonetheless, they do share some of the same things: bread, condiments, something to put on them, and some prepared fruits and vegetables. And don't forget something to drink.

Road Trip

The family trip is the new favorite. The picnic basket should be packed with plenty of sliced bread, and either sliced meat and cheese or peanut butter and jelly. Remember plastic knives, allowing the kids to make their own sandwiches. Also, remember to pack plenty of fruits and vegetables, preferably cut and chopped, and easy to grab for small fingers. Carrots and celery are obvious favorites, but olives and pickles are good as well. Try to forget the spicy and more pungent foods, like brie; the idea is to enjoy the sun and wind, the food is just an afterthought.

Cookies and juice definitely belong in the picnic basket. Forget milk; it spoils too quickly. Small chunks of cheese are good, as are juice boxes. Just keep in mind to keep it simple, and it should be fun for everyone. However, packing a picnic basket for two is a different mission.

When packing a picnic basket for just the two of you, you want to combine complex with simplicity. Remember to pack silverware, and make sure that you have the items bought ahead of time. You can be adults, enjoy it. Pack a light wine, like a merlot, or some wine coolers. Remember some cheese (this time you can remember the brie and pate), and some bread to slice. Also, bring a cutting board; otherwise it could get messy. The idea is just enjoy the company of one another, so bring some of your favorite things.

When you pack a picnic basket, the idea is to have fun. Remember that, your outing is bound to be a success. Don't bring any electronics; even a camera can be an unwanted distraction. Just enjoy the sun and wind, and the smiles of those with you, and the picnic basket will carry more than food.
