If someone had mentioned wall fountains made of slate to you ten years ago, the likelihood is that you would have thought about an outdoor water feature to finish a landscaped garden. That is not the case today.
There are slate wall fountains available today that can be installed on indoor walls in addition to the models that can be installed outdoors. They are extremely beautiful and will fit in with décor in almost any room so you can pick and choose one that you would like to hang.
Slate Fountain Options
Whether you want an indoor or an outdoor slate wall fountain for your home, there are hundreds that you can choose from. You can purchase them at home stores, garden centres, Internet stores and even DIY stores in a variety of styles, from the more traditional wall fountains featuring cherubs right through to the modern flat slate back types. As such, there is at least one to suit your tastes out there and having one inside or outside of your home is not as impossible as you may have previously thought.
The common thought is that slate wall fountains are extremely heavy and can only be installed on strong brick walls. This was the main reason why people did not have them as a decorative feature on the inside of their homes. However, many were also afraid to have them on the outside wall in case it undermined the structural safety of their homes.
Instead, they chose free standing structures. Believe it or not though, almost any type o wall can support the weight of a slate wall fountains. This includes the perceived weaker wall types such as cinder block and stud walling. There is now no excuse not to consider it.
You will find that installation instructions come with the slate wall fountain that you have chosen for your home and it is strongly recommended that you follow those instructions. The manufacturer will have rigorously tested the instructions beforehand and will give the best possible advice.
There is a difference in installation from fountain to fountain because there are so many types and sizes now that it is impossible to give a uniform set of instructions. However, that is not to say that there are not some useful hints and tips that can help you to get it right first time.
1. Always get someone else to help you install your fountain. This is for your own safety as well as to ensure that you do not damage the walling by making a mistake.
2. Have an electrical outlet installed somewhere behind the fountain rather than to the side. This is just inviting disaster. Try having it to the left hand side of the fountain so it is far enough away from the centre of the fountain but close enough to hide with tiling or a protective cover.
3. Prepare by obtaining the equipment you will need. The most common equipment and tools that are required are as follows: drill, stud finder, pencil, masking tape, spirit level, tape measure, hammer and a screwdriver.
Installing slate wall fountains is not difficult at all and is a great task for the DIY fan. However, do not attempt it if you cannot follow instructions properly. Mixing water with electricity is never a good idea if you are not prepared to protect yourself so make sure that you are fully aware of your own mortality and are fully confident before you begin.
